We take a more in-depth look at the award-winning “Best Hosted Solution” we implemented for Murphy Construction; we summarise the solution, identify the challenges it enabled Murphy to overcome, explain how it was project managed and finally we elaborate on it’s ROI.

Solution Summary

Murphy were winning more contracts, however every win was tarnished by the resources, time and expertise that was required to adapt, set up and begin projects as quickly as possible. When winning contracts, Murphy had to set up a number of temporary sites, which dragged them into implementing and managing telephony platforms, taking their resources away from their core business – construction.Furthermore, their on-site approach to telephony was forcing them into a constant state of over or under capacity; when setting up new or temporary sites they’d have to predict usage and requirements every time before committing to installation which wasn’t cost-efficient. The on-site kit also offered zero flexibility so if requirements changed it was tough, they were stuck with what they had.

IP Solutions recognised Murphy’s need for a more flexible, agile and cost-efficient telephony platform that gave them the freedom to focus on construction and not comms when winning new contracts. IP Solutions proposed, configured and installed a Hosted VoIP platform for Murphy. The platform supports their growth, avoids the usage/capacity guessing game and doesn’t drain internal resource.

Overcoming Business Challenges

The IP Solutions Hosted solution helped solve all three primary pains. The transition to a Hosted comms platform rather than an on-site PBX, meant that Murphy now had plug and play technology at their disposal; the plug and play element of hosted VoIP meant that Murphy no longer had to allocate a large amount of resource setting up the comms at a new site. Installation requires no experts so internal resources are no longer stretched and all that needs doing is plugging the phone in, meaning that there are no lengthy waiting times. This meant Murphy could begin work as quickly as possible, helping them maximise potential profit, improve efficiency and minimise overheads. Finally, the hosted platform offers greater flexibility in that it’s more of a utility than traditional technology – Murphy no longer have to predict their required capacity, they simply utilise exactly what they need and can amend usage as they go.

Implementing the Solution

Unlike other roll-out plans, the Murphy project was not based upon a single, one-off date of implementation on one or two constant sites. The whole value of VoIP for Murphy, was in the fact that it could be rolled out quickly and effectively across multiple sites as when it was needed. Therefore we constructed a detailed ongoing roll-out protocol that clearly defined the actions that would be taken by our support team to ensure Murphy had their new sites, up and running as quickly as possible.

Demonstrating Clear ROI

The Hosted VoIP solution and transition away from traditional technology has impacted Murphy’s bottom line directly by saving them money on kit maintenance, running over-capacity and installation costs. Our Hosted platform is maintained remotely and requires no engineers and is included in standard licence fees. It’s flexibility means there is no longer a need to run at either under or over capacity and installation is a simple case of plugging a phone in. Furthermore, if sites need to contact each other, they’re classed as internal calls and cost nothing, saving the Group on call charges. It’s flexibility has also enabled Murphy to begin projects as quickly as they want to without having to fret over comms implementation.
